A Republic, If You Can Keep It

As Benjamin Franklin walked off the floor of the constitutional convention, it’s said that an onlooker shouted at him, “Doctor, what have we got?  A republic, or a monarchy?” Franklin is said to have replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” Here on the other side of election day, as we wait or work or worry or re-commit, what does it take to live out the vision of a fair and free republic?
