It’s (Not) Easy Being Green

March 1, 2022

Kermit has it right:

It’s not easy bein’ green

Having to spend each day the color of the leaves

When I think it could be nicer bein’ red or yellow or gold

Or something much more colorful like that

It’s not easy bein’ green…

Cause you’re not standing out

Like flashy sparkles on the water or stars in the sky

We do like to be colorful; we do like to stand out; we do like to have it our way, enjoying all the flashy sparkles and conveniences of modern life… cheap gas for our multiple cars, same-day underwear delivery, and prepackaged, plastic-wrapped, microwave-ready green beans.

But most of us feel a little guilty every day, knowing that these habits of convenience are part of a culture that has now indisputably endangered the global environment. Luckily, Kermit has wisdom to go with his wistfulness:

But green’s the color of spring

And green can be cool and friendly like

And green can be big like a mountain

Or important like a river or tall like a tree

And we know, as Kermit does, that at this moment, for the health of our planet, “green is all there is to be.” But the enormity of the challenge “could make you wonder why” and how and if we can really make a difference, right?

Kermit advises:

But, why wonder, why wonder?

I’m green and it’ll do fine

It’s beautiful and I think it’s what I want to be.

We do all want be green, even though it’s often not easy… so each month on this blog, members of RRUUC’s Earth Ministry will offer you three resources to focus your attention and learn about:

???? an area of challenge and opportunity in the climate warming crisis

???? one practical action you can take in your home, neighborhood or at the RRUUC building

???? one advocacy action you can take to influence climate rescue policy

We’ll try to keep it clear and simple, and after the opening three items, you’ll find a deeper dive into material designed to inspire sustained commitment to the work of sustainability, plus news about other events and actions you might find interesting.

In March we’ll be focusing on transportation concerns – read on to our next post – and in April, Earth Month, we’ll work on food-related actions.

Finally, you’ll always find information here about Earth Ministry’s monthly meetings, so that if you are moved to be an Extra Green Activist, you can join our group. We especially welcome younger people, who have the greatest dependence on making the planet healthy for the future, to get involved and guide our work!

NEXT MEETING SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 11:00 AM

The Earth Ministry (EM) meets online on the 3rd Sunday of the month, beginning at 11:00. We start with quick check-ins and socializing since that time overlaps with the Zoom and in-person fellowship following the 10am service. EM business starts at 11:15am.

The Zoom link for the meeting will be announced in the same email that brings you links for Sunday’s service. We aim to conclude by 12:00 when the Contemporary Issues Forum meets.
