Lay-led Services

Six to eight Sunday mornings a year, RRUUC features a lay-led worship service. These services emphasize enhancing the worship experience of RRUUC as a congregation while providing particularly valuable and rewarding experiences for those who work on each service.

Anyone interested in exploring a variety of topics that become the thematic material for each service is encouraged to contact the committee chairs. Individuals are free to participate in the planning and/or presentation of as few or as many services as they wish. The atmosphere of the committee is conducive to warm, supportive fellowship and opportunities for personal and spiritual growth abound. Join us!

Guidelines for Submitting a Proposal

Thanks for your interest in convening a lay-led service at River Road in the upcoming congregational year. Please answer the following questions as specifically as possible.

For those interested in the October and November services, please submit your proposal by August 23. All other proposals are due by September 15.

For further information, email the Co-Chairs of the Lay-Led Worship Group: Carolyn LoBuglio and David Yang at layled@rruuc.org.

(You may use the mouse to place the cursor in the proper space or Tab between spaces; Do not use the Enter key as that will send the form prematurely.)

  1. What is your topic?

  2. In what sense is your topic spiritual?

  3. What specific aspects of your general topic will you explore?

  4. How will storytelling be integrated into the service? (We encourage you to create sermons that go beyond traditional exposition.)

  5. How will music or other performing arts be integrated into the service?

  6. How will you structure the service? (We encourage you to experiment with the traditional form of a UU service.)

  7. If your topic is similar to any other lay-led topics of the past four years (see the list below), how will your service differ
from the related past services? (You can access the texts or videos of past services on RRUUC’s Web site.)

  8. Who will be the conveners? Will you combine experienced and new conveners?

  9. Are you willing to accept the support of two experienced conveners who will comment on your draft presentations and provide notes on your rehearsal?
