Our Whole Lives (OWL)

Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education and Values Across the Lifespan

We currently offer Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education program for three levels, Junior High is offered for 8th graders, Senior High is offered every other year for 10th-12th graders in the winter, Adult is offered occasionally. Information about the curriculum can be found on the UUA's website at http://www.uua.org/re/owl/. For more information on RRUUC's programs, please contact Beth Irikura, Religious Educator for Youth or Gabrielle Farrell, Lifespan Religious Educator.

Junior High OWL

Helps 8th grade participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in: sexuality, sex, sensuality, anatomy, friendships, dating, communication, health care and more.

Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. Note: Permission from parents is required for this class, and parents or guardians must attend 2 parent/guardian orientations or meet with the instructors. Regular attendance is expected and class structure does not permit drop-in visitors.

Senior High OWL

Senior High Our Whole Lives (OWL) will be offered for current 10th-12th grade youth. Sessions will be on Sundays from January 8-April 9 from 11:15 - 1:00 p.m. Parent permission is required to participate in this program.

OWL Sexuality Education is taught by trained experienced educators, Katherine Hubley and Peter Benjamin. The UUA website describes OWL this way: "Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality."

Adult OWL

Participants are guided by trained and experienced RRUUC member facilitators in an engaging program that addresses topics many adults have not had the opportunity to discuss in depth. Through this structured facilitation, the course leaders will assist the participants in examining sexuality as it encompasses the full expression of gender, the intellectual and emotional as well as biological dimensions of sexual being, and how all these factors are affected by cultural and personal values.

Our Whole Lives In the Local News

Recently on WAMU's Metro Connections show, our high school youth and some of their teachers reflect on their experiences in our OWL classes. Listen to what they have to say.
