The Reverend Scott Alexander was called to be the Senior Minister of the River Road Unitarian Church in June of 1998.

He was born in 1949, and was raised by his parents in Racine, Wisconsin, in a large Unitarian Universalist family with his three brothers. He attended public schools, and subsequently graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude) in 1971, with a BA in Urbanology. In 1973, he graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree from the Starr King School for the Ministry, in Berkeley, California, and became a fellowshipped Unitarian Universalist minister.

In January of 1974 he was called to be the minister of the First Church of Houlton, Maine (Unitarian Universalist) where he served until 1978. From 1978 until 1988 he served as the minister of the First Unitarian Society of Plainfield, New Jersey. In September of 1988, Rev. Alexander joined the staff of the Church of the Larger Fellowship (a "church without walls" for almost 3,000 isolated Unitarian Universalists scattered all around the world) in Boston, Massachusetts, as Minister/Administrator. In June of 1989, he was also appointed director of the Office of Lesbian and Gay Concerns, and the AIDS Action and Information Program, of the Unitarian Universalist Association - where he served until being called as the Senior Minister of the Church of the Larger Fellowship in 1991. In June of 1998, Rev. Alexander desiring a return to the parish ministry, was called to be the minister of our River Road Unitarian Church.

Rev. Alexander is the editor or author of five books. He wrote The Relational Pulpit: Closing the Gap Between Pulpit and Pew, a book on preaching in the liberal tradition which is widely used in Unitarian Universalist seminaries and homiletics courses. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Homiletics at Andover Newton Theological School, and teaches preaching at other seminars around the continent. He has edited four popular Unitarian Universalist volumes: The Welcoming Congregation: Resources for Affirming Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Persons; AIDS and Your Religious Community: A hands-on Guide to Local Programming; Salted With Fire: Unitarian Universalist Strategies for Sharing Faith and Growing Congregations; and Everyday Spiritual Practice: Simple Pathways for Enriching Your Life. Rev. Alexander is a widely sought after speaker, preacher and workshop leader in Unitarian Universalist circles, and is widely respected as a dynamic, inspiring and thoughtful leader in our movement.

For his entire ministerial career, Rev. Alexander has been a social activist committed to increasing social justice - both in the local community and the nation as a whole. He has served a wide variety of human service organizations including national and local AIDS/HIV agencies, Planned Parenthood, agencies for the mentally retarded, the YMCA, and adoption agencies for hard-to-place children. He has also actively participated in various social justice initiatives of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Rev. Alexander lives in Washington,D.C., with his partner, H. Collins Mikesell,who works for the Association of American Medical Colleges. Rev. Alexander is an avid bicyclist, commuting to church that way most days and averaging more than 200 miles on his bike a week, and who also enjoys cross-country skiing, swimming, and hiking. His personal interests include reading American fiction, attending fine arts events, and cooking for family and friends.
